Ideas, trends and experiments:
Distance education may be the solution to the huge literacy gap existing in our unequally developed world. The idea is to promote digitalization and the free sharing of knowledge and teaching resources.
Technology already allows us to move the learning experience to non-traditional classroom settings such as libraries, refugee camps or hospitals and clinics.
Furthermore, educational content could be easily displayed on screens placed in high traffic public places such as parks, airports or bus stops.
In this spirit, teachers from disadvantaged communities could be trained through online meetings with academics from different parts of the world.
How to reach remote schools with no internet access
Many schools from around the world are not connected to the internet. Yet these educational institutions could still benefit from distance education. Alternatives to an internet connection:
mobile libraries that tour remote rural communities
free offline and no-data mobile phone applications.
storing educational resources on portable devices. The e-lessons could be saved on cheap laptops, or even recycled mobile phone, ipods and photo cameras.
